Postdoctoral position in theoretical astrophysics with a focus on cosmic magnetism

A 2-year postdoctoral position is available at the Argelander Institute for Astronomy (AIfA) at the University of Bonn, Germany, within the research group led by Dr. Jennifer Schober. The starting date for the position is flexible, but we anticipate it to be between the beginning of 2025 and fall 2025.

Project overview

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to study the origin, evolution, and impact of magnetic fields in the Universe. The project will involve theoretical and computational research, focusing on early-Universe magnetic fields and their influence on various cosmological phenomena. The successful candidate will work on analytical models and on numerical simulations, and familiarity with relevant simulation codes will be a considerable asset.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in physics, astrophysics, or a related field. A strong background in theoretical astrophysics, magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics, cosmology, and computational techniques is preferred. Programming skills and proficiency in English are essential.

Working environment

The successful candidate will become part of the vibrant research community at AIfA, a leading institute with a broad range of expertise from stellar evolution to cosmology. AIfA is located next to the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfA), fostering a rich collaborative environment.

The University of Bonn, situated along the scenic Rhine River, offers an inspiring academic atmosphere. In addition to the strong astrophysics research at AIfA, the university hosts world-renowned theoretical cosmology and particle physics groups, providing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The University of Bonn is in close vicinity to other leading research institutions, such as the University of Cologne and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, offering further opportunities for collaboration and research support. Additionally, the city of Bonn hosts several international institutions, including the United Nations campus, enriching the cultural and professional landscape.

The University of Bonn is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from women and minorities.
